Artstor and JSTOR Forum

JMU Libraries offers two systems to support academic use of images.

Artstor (link to Artstor) has user-friendly features for viewing and engaging with images:

  • Login with your eID and password
  • Any JMU user can add their own images to a Personal Collection in Artstor. [Learn more]
  • Images can be shared “just with the institution” or publicly (within copyright limits) [Learn more]
  • Artstor digital library contains millions of licensed and open access images [Learn more]
  • Images from the digital library and/or personal collections can be organized into groups [Learn more].
  • Presentations of images can be created from groups [Learn more].
    • Downloaded into a powerpoint
    • Viewed in an online viewer with features like pan-and-zoom and quiz mode!
  • JMU faculty and staff can now add images to the Artstor platform using a behind-the-scenes tool called “JSTOR Forum.” [Learn more]
    • Heavy-duty cataloging and metadata tools
    • More granular sharing permissions (e.g. list specific users, as one might for a class)
    • Creation of institutional collections

In 2018-2019, JMU Libraries will be giving demonstrations and workshops in Artstor and JSTOR Forum, and asking for faculty feedback. Artstor’s own webinars are excellent [See webinars].

MDID (link to existing MDID page) has been used at JMU for decades and will still be available for similar purposes to Artstor.
