Respondus LockDown Browser is a special browser for taking exams in Canvas. You can find the following information about LockDown Browser on this page: 


What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a secure browser for taking exams in Canvas. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Canvas exam requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser should only be used for Canvas tests. It should not be used in other areas of Canvas.

Note: In order to install and use Respondus LockDown Browser, you will need a PC or Mac computer or an iPad. You cannot use LockDown Browser with a personally-owned Chromebook. Please let your instructor know as soon as possible if you do not have access to a compatible device.


How do I install Respondus LockDown Browser on my Windows or Mac computer?

  1. You must have administrative privileges for LockDown browser to work properly. Log in as the administrator on your computer.
  2. Go to Download the Respondus Lockdown Browser. Note: this link will most likely detect your operating system You will likely see James Madison University above the “Install Now” button. Choose the Windows or Macintosh version if necessary.
  3. Select Install Now.
  4. The rest of the installation process should work just like installing any other applications on your computer.
  5. Verify Respondus LockDown Browser is working properly well in advance of the first time you will need to use it.

How do I install Respondus LockDown Browser on my iPad?

Download and install the LockDown Browser app from the Apple App Store.


How do I take a Canvas exam with Respondus LockDown Browser on my Windows or Mac computer?

  1. Close all programs, except for the program(s) used to connect you to the Internet.
  2. Start Respondus LockDown Browser. If you are taking a quiz in Canvas that was created with the New Quizzes LTI, you can launch your normal browser and navigate to the exam, and LockDown Browser will automatically launch when you click the exam.
    • For Windows users, double-click on the LockDown Browser shortcut on the desktop. Or, click Start in Windows, select Programs, select Respondus, and then select Respondus LockDown Browser.
    • For Macintosh users, double-click LockDown Browser in the Applications folder.
  3. Upon starting, the browser will go to the login page for Canvas.
  4. A warning message may appear, indicating that one or more applications must first be exited, such as an instant messaging application. The browser will offer to close the applications. Choose Yes when prompted.
  5. Log into Canvas with your JMU eID, password and Duo. Select the appropriate course, and then select the exam.
  6. Prior to the start of the assessment, a pop-up window will ask you whether the exam requires a password. The window has a blue border at the top.
    • If this window does not appear, it means that you are not running Respondus LockDown Browser.
    • If your instructor provided a password for the exam, select the Yes option, enter the password, and click the Continue button.
    • If your instructor did not set up the test with a password, select the No option and click the Continue button.
  7. Do NOT edit this password field on the next screen. Respondus LockDown Browser will automatically fill in a special password with a set of ••••••••• characters. Do not edit this password, even if the exam does not have a password. Doing so will prevent you from accessing the exam.
  8. Click the Submit button to start the exam. Note: If you attempt to use any browser other than Respondus LockDown Browser to access the exam, the password field will appear blank and you will be unable to start the exam. If your instructor provided an exam password, it will NOT work in this particular password field.
  9. The exam will then start. Once the exam is started with Respondus LockDown Browser, you will be unable to exit until the Submit button is clicked.

How do I take a Canvas exam with Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor?

Before you start an exam that is using Respondus Monitor, confirm that you have: 

If you do not have these items and need to request other exam options, contact your instructor.

During an exam using Respondus Monitor, please stay in your seat and focus on the computer screen until the exam is complete. You shouldn’t access other resources (a phone, tablet, notes, books, etc.) or communicate with other people. If an interruption occurs, briefly explain what happened by speaking directly to your webcam. And, finally, remember that you should not exit the exam until all questions are completed and you have submitted it for grading.
