Welcome to biochemistry! This guide will provide helpful Libraries resources to help you efficiently find proteins, enzymes, and other biochemical literature. At any time, please do not hesitate to reach out to Prof. Kathryn Shenk for assistance in finding literature to support your work.
The following three resources are proteins and enzyme knowledgebases. These resources provide essential background information that can lay the foundation for your research. Think of these knowledgebases as an encyclopedia that provides a brief information snapshot. Search in these resources first, to learn more about your topic, before moving on to other databases or resource types.
JMU Libraries provides access to scholarly databases. Databases provide a variety of materials, including book review, trade journals, and scholarly, peer-reviewed articles. For the purposes of Biochemistry, you should rely on a mix of information sources, ranging from enzyme knowledgebases (as mentioned above), peer-reviewed articles, and depending on your topic, you may also need a few book chapters.
The databases below provide good chemistry materials:
Last but not least, depending on your topic, you may need to consult a book or e-book. In learning more about your enzyme or protein, you may notice that research spans many decades, with ebbs and flows across this timeline. While journal articles have long been the norm in the sciences, some authors may have written about their work in book chapters. To search for books, use the Libraries catalog (aka, Library Search, which is linked below) to see what materials are available.
