“Community over Commercialization” is the theme for this year’s International Open Access Week (October 23-29). This theme encourages a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community—and which do not.
More information on the OA Week website.
On this page, we have listed out Open Access events happening in academic libraries across the country. All events are free, though some do require that you register. This is by no means a comprehensive list of what events are happening around the world!

Please join MIT Libraries and the MIT Press on October 26, 2023, for an online panel with the editor of Imaging Neuroscience, a new open access journal that launched after editorial teams from two Elsevier journals left the publisher over disputes around the high cost for authors.
We'll explore some of the benefits and challenges of moving a journal from a large, commercial publisher to a non-profit university press, and how the new journal better prioritizes the interests of this community.
The webinar is part of MIT's celebration of Open Access Week, whose theme this year asks us to think about what's lost when a shrinking number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves.

The aim of the II International Scientific Conference "Open Science and Innovation in Ukraine 2023" is to stimulate dialogue among stakeholders of the scientific community to discuss practical aspects of implementing the principles of open science and innovation in Ukraine. The conference aims to explore viable solutions to address pressing issues such as uninterrupted access to research infrastructure, free access to full-text scholarly publications, the need to reform the system of research evaluation, and accelerate the integration of Ukrainian science into the European Research Area by aligning with European Union policies on open science and data exchange formats. The discussions and presentations will result in a list of recommendations for higher education institutions and research establishments. These recommendations will contribute to the implementation of practical measures and policies to support open science and innovation in Ukraine. The event serves as an open platform for exchanging experiences, ideas, and knowledge, promoting scientific progress, and fostering the development of the Ukrainian scientific community.

This year’s open access week theme, “Community over Commercialization,” is relevant to not only journals but also other parts of the scholarly communication infrastructure. There are now over 50 preprint servers for the biomedical community, many of which—including the largest by monthly volume, Research Square—are owned or closely affiliated with for-profit publishers. By owning servers, publishers can seamlessly integrate preprints into the journal submission workflow, thereby normalizing preprinting and helping the concept reach new audiences. While for-profit ownership raises questions about a server’s integration with other services, responsiveness to community needs, and adherence to principles of open scholarship, these issues are in fact relevant to non-profit entities as well. In this event, we will discuss principles for open infrastructure and how different preprint servers interact with their communities.
