MGT 320 - Management of Innovation and Technology

This guide will help students who are doing research on innovation.

Trends in Your Industry

An industry is a group of business who sell similar goods or services. IBISWorld reports are useful because they summarize trends that affect an industry such as changes to federal regulations.

Look under Products and Markets in any industry report for a key innovations occurring in the industry. Then check External Environment for demographic and macroeconomic factors impact the industry.

Try reviewing the reports about IT Consulting in the US, Data Processing & Hosting Services in the US or IT Security Consulting in the US.

Tip: IBISWorld industry reports also has state-level data. Look for State Industry Reports at the bottom of the menu.

News in Your Industry

Factiva allows you to search for news articles or press releases about a particular industry. Factiva contains business news sources from all over the world and contains financial and operational reports for publicly traded companies (e.g., IBM; Accenture, Infosys).

The industry searches most useful this semester are IT Support Services and Online Service Providers.

Restrictions on AI usage

Market research reports are among the most expensive types of business information. The companies that provide our market research reports can be very strict about how their information can be used in AI tools.

IBISWorld prohibits the uploading of reports to third parties, including Copilot

Industry associations

These groups might publish research about the state of the industry or toolkits to help your client identify new opportunities or successfully market a new product. Some industry associations only make research available to dues-paying members. Ask your client if they are a member.
