CoB Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

This guide will introduce you to foundational research skills to begin your journey as a research assistant.

Session 1 - Activity

As you conduct your literature review it’s important to keep good notes. These notes will help you share your evaluation of the literature with your faculty mentor and other research collaborators, revisit articles you’ve reviewed for future reference, and prepare you for creating your final research product. To practice this skill let’s review an article together!

Fletcher, G. and Kutar, M. (2024, January 19). We asked AI to draft a business plan. Here’s what we got. The Wall Street Journal. https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-drafted-business-plan-results-82d29bdb

You can use our subscription to the Wall Street Journal to access this article.

Use the worksheet provided to guide your analysis of this article. Be prepared to report out to the entire group at the end to discuss your thoughts.

Session 1 - Discussion Questions

Before coming to Part 2 of the training session next week, be sure to talk with your faculty member and get responses to these three questions:

  1. Summarize 1-2 key takeaways from the most recent article they published and share what initially inspired them to investigate that topic.
  2. Suggest 1-2 readings you can do to prepare for your research project.
  3. Discuss what makes a student who is new to research successful as a research assistant.
