CoB Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

This guide will introduce you to foundational research skills to begin your journey as a research assistant.

Get Help with Research

Did you know that JMU Libraries has a liaison librarian for each major? Students can contact their librarian for help with research projects or taking advantage of supplemental course materials like the Libraries' subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal or Sports Business Journal

Book an appointment with your librarian to discuss:

  • Narrowing your research topic
  • Finding articles or data
  • Evaluating articles for quality
  • Managing your citations with tools like Zotero
  • and more!

Librarians cannot help with:

  • Designing your final research product, e.g. advise on a poster design or copyedit your research paper
  • Checking your citations for accuracy

Not sure who to contact? Start with the librarian for your major and we will help you find the right place.

You and Your Faculty Mentor

While librarians can help introduce you to common quantitative and qualitative research methods and finding research methodologies used in your field through scholarly research, you will need to work with your faculty mentor on:

  • Applying a research methodology to your research project, e.g. building a survey
  • Interpreting or analyzing proprietary data or data collected from your research study
  • Data storytelling, e.g. visualizing data in a infographic

Read Business News

Reading business news published by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or the Financial Times can help you see how the concepts, principles, and rules you're learning about in business courses operate in the real world.

News organizations also publish more frequently than scholarly journals, so they are more likely to talk about current issues affecting the business world. News organizations tend to publish articles daily, whereas scholarly journals might publish new articles every 3 months or 6 months.

When a significant business development occurs, such as an accounting scandal or product safety investigation, it might take 18 months or more for that event to be studied in the scholarly literature.

JMU Libraries subscribes to several business news sites. With your JMU email address, you can sign up to read these articles in your browser or on your phone at no additional cost.
